A Moving Event as Liam Rosenior Transcends Barriers

"He is an excellent tactician that understands football back to front, and that's the most important thing.

"But, as the Blues' pioneering African heritage footballer, I would be lying to claim this moment fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his historic debut for the Blues' first team off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next manager following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also owns the London club.

Statistics show a mere 12 of African or Caribbean heritage managers – excluding those in temporary caretaker positions – in the Premier League since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he understands the local fans," added Canoville.

"When children see a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, a person who looks like them, who's from their ends, who comes from a household that fights for equality… that's impactful demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents an enormous step for Chelsea, for London, for every young person dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Does the Data Show?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural black manager.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English manager in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of managers of colour across the English game corresponds with a lack of representation at executive level.

As per a Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers are from black heritage.

Yet, analysis from the equality organization revealed only 3.2% of executive and leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

At first-team coaching level, according to data from 11 clubs, the percentage stands at 2%.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing head coaches – from the same 11 clubs, the figure is just 5%.

"He's certainly made history in terms of him being announced as a the Chelsea manager, and we hope to see more of that," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is a wealth of ability present in the ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to work hard to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee will become one of only four permanent English head coaches presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which trails Europe's other major leagues regarding national representation.

Sixteen out of twenty top-flight managers in Italy are Italian, 11 in La Liga are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga are German while Ten in Ligue 1 are French.

The present Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure every young English managers from an academy background are, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is truly inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness an individual land that job with that profile and we hope he does highly successful."

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, played for the likes of West London clubs, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a five-month stint in charge of the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling inequality within the sport and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He started writing a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he addressed the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that race does not determine ability arguing that roles should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: that vast under-representation results in a failure to understand of players from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" or "passionate", noting that he understood the Dutch player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to Chelsea in July.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted he was "embarrassed" to hear a staff member utter a homophobic slur. He vowed support for the Rainbow Laces campaign and authored an open letter to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since made his name as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye to his former club earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea boasted the Premier League's pioneering black manager in Gullit and the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
