The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
