The star has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to protect the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

The star was awarded the prize on 16 October as his third album People Watching was named the top album of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in recognition of the vital role small stages had in his initial steps.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the performances I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," stated the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

He also joined in, generating more than £100,000 on his live tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues stemming from flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted financial assistance in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The idea that revenue from shows in large arenas supports the smaller venues, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just common sense," the star has stated.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

When they won the trophy in 1996 for their record the album, vocalist Cocker announced that the act would donate their prize money to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, musician she shared her prize across a few charities, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also donated a grand to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required better apparatus," she told a publication.

Previously, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the local youth club that nurtured their group, as well as other local music groups.

Additionally winners that year M People contributed their award to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was identified with the disease.

"Winning was quite enough," said singer Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the honor. So our success impacted somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had protected two small stages in south-east England, by placing them under local control.

One venue in that area and the other in Bristol were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is supported by a national body and supporters who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
